The big black box of electronics that is Sony’s PlayStation 3 has managed to reach the 2 million (that’s a 2 and six zeros) units sold mark in the UK. This number has been reached in a little under two years since being released in the region. The self proclaimed games console/media centre made it’s debut in March 2007.

These healthy sales numbers were achieved despite bleak economic conditions in the UK and global markets and with the PS3’s high price tag. The MD and senior vice president for SCE UK, Ray Maguire, acknowledges the “premium price” but defends the cost by saying consumers are getting “the best product you can get”.

Maguire also believes the PlayStation will continue to see the success in the UK it has received so far, claiming the console will manage another million unit sales over the next year. This makes sense as the console is currently averaging a million sales a year, with rumours of a price cut finally coming in the next few months and more people looking towards indoor entertainment during the recession (yes, I said it), it seems keeping a steady rate of sales is an achievable target for Sony.

Maguire concludes by reinforcing his belief in Sony choosing to go for a more streamlined product in exchange for higher prices:

“If you look at the RRP that we’ve had out there for 2 million units, and compare it to PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, it’s amazing that we’ve got to this kind of level. Actually, I’m really pleased with that – it does show that the premium product was the right strategy to have.”
