At a recent technology conference Actvision CEO Bobby Kotick let slip that the company is considering turning the call of duty series in to a massively multiplayer online game. Call of Duty is by far Activisions biggest franchise and industry insiders see this as a massive gamble by the development firm. The next Call of Duty has of course caused much speculation with many believing that the game will go back to its World War 2 roots.
The idea stems from the proposed merger with Vivendi who of course own both Sierra and Blizzard. This is significant because Blizzard already have a very successful franchise in the market (World of War Craft). If the Call of Duty series and merger do go in this direction you can bet your bottom dollar that Activision will be calling on Blizzard for help. Of course the MMO market is extremely difficult to break and many big players have attempted and failed in this area.
Although this is under consideration we are pretty sure that this will not go ahead. Call of Duty 4 continually appears in the top ten lists for online games and has been a massive hit with fans. Surely Activision would not want to lose out on their massive fan base.

I like the idea but it’s hard to see how it will work. That’s not to say I don’t think it will happen. I think online gaming is going to be pushed more by developers as it’s a good way to avert piracy, most of all in MMO’s or games like TF2
