Is it us or do EA appear to have run out of new names for its games. You think they could have come up with something slight more inventive than Tiberium. Anyway back to the game. EA are having another stab at turning its famous real time strategy game into a first person shooter. EA have been here before back in 1995 but failed to make a real impact. This time things will be different. Consoles have developed considerably since then and EA have more expansive controls to play with. Tiberium will continue the storyline from Command & Conqueror 3 and is set in the years after the historic third Tiberium war. The Alien Scrin invaders that invaded earth were crushed in the war but left a stern reminder in the form of a tower. The tower is a significant set piece within the game.

In Tiberium you take control of a character called Vega. Vega is a leading member of the Global Defence Initiative and is responsible for protecting mother earth. Vega has control of numerous teams and units which he can dispatch at will. Your leading man will also carry a powerful GD-10 assault rifle which can be transformed into four different types of weapon. The four types are grenade launcher, missile launcher, assault rifle and energy cannon which doubles as a sniper. He sounds a bit like master chief to us.

The controls for the new title are said to be something of a burden to the developers but EA are aiming to blend the squad controls of the RTS with the intense controls of a first person shooter. It will be interesting to see how that turns out. So far we know that the D pad will be used to call in units such as air strikes. The game will also fill in some of the historical gaps left by the Command & Conqueror series. This will please fans no end as the series have often had great storylines but left some bits to the imagination.

We are told that the inspiration for the game comes from the manner in which Special Forces troops operate behind enemy lines. Executive producer Chris Plummer explains that these guys are deadly weapons who are capable of dispatching enemies in numerous ways. Chris said he wants Vega to have the same sort of capabilities. A one stop shop so to speak. Command & Conqueror Tiberium is not expected until the very end of the year and will appear on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. We will keep you updated folks!!!
