The official PlayStation.Blog has been updated with a new article regarding the new firmware for both the PSP and PS3. First of all, the entry takes a look at the new PSP firmware. Below I have listed the new major features with details.
1. PlayStation Network Integration
The blog states “You can now sign up for PlayStation Network, manage your account and access [the] PlayStation Store directly from your PSP”.
They finally got around to combining the PSP and PS3 via the PSN (a lot of acronyms there sorry) to give users an all-round togetherness. You can now view the PlayStation store and download games, demos, trailers, etc. directly to your PSP without a PC or PlayStation 3 console. This can all be done through a Wi-Fi connection. This will pave the way to a completely accessible PlayStation Network community. Some games will soon support over-the-net ad-hoc thanks to this update!
2. Sleep Timer
A sleep function has been added, allowing you to leave the PSP playing music or movies whilst knowing that if you fall asleep or leave the room and forget to turn the PSP off, ti will simply switch itself off, preserving battery power.
3. Full Screen Keyboard
No need to struggle when trying to type messages, website addresses and similar. Now the keyboard is full screen and much clearer.
4. “redesigned” XMB background
Not sure what this means yet, the blog was scarce on details.
