Good Games Means No Money

Posted by Stefan Crowe On January - 15 - 2009

Time for another one of my opinionated rant articles. This time it is about money…and games obviously.

Money is usually the reason for everything that happens. Money or religion. More often than not it is money and religion. For instance, most games have an overall story that revolves about a religion of some type (usually made up) or a massive corporation trying to make more money. Some even have a massive religion trying to make more money so they can make their religion world-dominant, etc.

My rant is about real life money though, not virtual money (unless it is PSN wallet funds -  I count that as real money*). Since about October last year I have bought or been bought a lot of games. My PS3 collection is probably lower than others but impressive none-the-less. At last count I owned 22 PlayStation 3 games, not including downloaded PSN games. With an average price of about £35 you can sue some simple maths** it is easy to work out that that’s about £770. That’s stupid amounts of money to spend on a virtual world. I will have a debt collector knocking on my door at this rate.

Now, I have quite a few games, but I haven’t even bought every game that I wanted. Some I have simply borrowed or rented. I would have liked to buy Bioshock for example, but as it has no multiplayer so I just borrowed it off a friend…for the PC. Games like Grand Theft Auto allow you to work as a debt collector, which is great because that’s exactly who will come see me if I can’t kick my gaming habit.

I already know I’m going to be buying Resident Evil 5 and Killzone 2. I still have to buy Resistance 2 and Call of Duty: World at War. My future is looking pretty poor (monetary-wise).

So as a plea, I am asking that no more good games are released for a good few months after the ones above. That should give me ample time to clear my debts and finish off my backlog (I’ve only completed about 50% of my games).
