According to Noan Rimon, Senior Development Manager over at SCEA, a new feature called “Life with PlayStation” will be launching sometime in this month. The newest addition to the XMB portfolio was due by the end of July originally. Rimon states the delay was “Due to a few procedural matters”. Exactly what this means is anyone’s guess.
Life with PlayStation was revealed at the E3 show in July. The service is not game-related, instead focusing on community features such as the news and weather. Although news and weather were the only two parts of the service shown at E3, more features have been promised as time progresses.
The user interface, consisting of a 3-dimensional model of the earth, gives users the ability to spin to planet to different regions. Major cities are marked on the map, with regional weather and news displayed as you spin the globe to each one. As usual, the whole concept performs smoothly and has a sleek and glossy appearance.
It is possible this is Sony’s attempt to out-perform the Wii “Channels”, in this case the News and Weather channels in particular. The Wii employs a similar globe-based interface to display world-wide reports. But with the horsepower behind the PS3 version, the outcome is at least visually more appealing.
Sony hopes to integrate advertising in to the service eventually, presumably to help offset the huge costs incurred from running the entire PSN for free.
