Nintendo have released a press statement regarding a successor to the much-loved Nintendo DS (which stands for Dual Screen in case you didn’t know). Coming to homes in 2011 (in the territory of Japan at least) is the Nintendo 3DS. The name change was a bit minimal, but the key point is it now spells out ‘3D’ S, because that’s exactly what the next Nintendo handheld will support.
The Japanese computer games company is promising a glasses-free 3D gaming device and will feature full backwards compatibility, as is Nintendo’s way. The Nintendo 3DS (possibly a codename at the moment) will be revealed at this years E3 event in June, it isn’t expected to get a retail release until 2011. Though I wouldn’t be shocked if it miraculously makes a Christmas holiday release this year.
