A new firmware update has been announced and, soon after, released for all to download. The PlayStation.Blog released details on the new system patch.
The changes are a mixed bag, with the usual addition of a feature we didn’t necessarily want, but is actually quite good. That feature is a new Photo Gallery app. This isn’t a simple slideshow like the PlayStation 3 has always had. It is an advanced application that allows you sort and display pictures based on a wide variety of criteria. You can even arrange photos by the “facial expressions of the people pictured”, which seems a bit too futuristic to me – cue the “Big Brother” paranoia. The software can also create slideshows (just because I said it was simple doesn’t mean I didn’t like it) that utilise music.
Eric Lempel, PSN Operation Director, adds: “The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.”
Here is a small list of all the changes you can expect from firmware 2.60:
- PlayStation Store now allows guests (non-PSN users) to browse the store, but not download anything.
- DivX updated to 3.11 – Apparently many more video files playback successfully now.
- Photo Gallery added
