Last Week Sony showed off their latest iteration of Home to an expectant crowd at a tech show in Monte Carlo. Home is not expected until later in the year but Sony was keen to keep people interested by showing off some new features. When Home was first announced and the first screenshot filtered through we were shown a lot of indoor environments but Sony have decided to replace a lot of these with spacious outdoor environments. This would certainly fall in line with the style of Second Life. Sony was also keen to point out how usable Home was by implementing clever sign posts which tell users where to go.
Although there will be fewer indoor areas Sony have improved the remaining areas considerably. It’s about quality rather than quantity in their eyes. The beautiful looking movie theatre has been expanded and now has an upper floor. The theatre has 10 screens and will allow users to watch movies, hopefully some of the latest releases. Checkers and Chess tables have also been added to the town square so that users can meet up and make new friends.
Its clear Sony are very excited by this project and have spent time building up the environments in the world of Home. It is said that the inspiration for city environments have come from world famous cities such as Berlin, New York and Las Vegas. Also users will be able to purchase new items such as furniture and clothes using real money. Users will have to use their PSN accounts to purchase items. We are sceptical as to whether people will buy these items as do they really add any value to the game.

Many have tried to categorise or even summarise Home. Some people say it’s the future of social networking, or it’s a virtual chat forum or even the next Facebook. What ever you see it as it’s definitely going to have a significant impact on the way Playstation owners use their machine. We are hopeful that Home will take Playstations online features far beyond that of the Xbox live service. Lets just hope Sony regularly add content.
