PlayTV DRM-free Again, Easy Transfers

Posted by Stefan Crowe On September - 9 - 2008

First of all Sony told us the PlayTV would not contain DRM protection, allowing owners to transfer recordings to a PSP or any other media device. This made quite a few people happy, being able to easily take their favourite TV shows or films anywhere for free (sort of).

Then, more recently, there were suggestions floating around the internet saying that Sony had retracted their previous claims. That meant no more saved file transfer, although they stated the remote play video streaming would still work.

Now that the kit has been sent out for review worldwide, it seems Sony has made the saved files DRM-free once again. Hopefully this isn’t just for the reviewer versions, although they should be sent the same kit that will be going retail.

Another annoyance to potential buyers was the lack of HD support, which had been hinted as an included feature originally. However, according to some sources, Sony may be looking at adding the feature via a PS3 firmware update in the future.

PlayTV is due 19 September 2008 at the retail price of £69.99. But online retailers such as Amazon and Play.com are already offering the hardware and software combo for below £60.
