PlayTV is a digital TV PVR (personal video recorder) for the Sony PlayStation 3. It boasts dual tuners, allowing a user to record one channel and view another at the same time, or even record two separate channels simultaneously. The hardware is a small black box that attaches to the PS3 via a USB port. The software can be run in the background whilst using the PS3’s normal functions, so you can continue to play a game while you record your favourite shows. PlayTV also supports HD signals and output, so it’s future-ready for the UK release of Freeview HD.
The gadget was announced back in 2007, at the GC (Gamers Convention) in Leipzig. It had an estimated price tag of £100, with a rough release date of early 2008. David Reeves told us recently that the price tag had been set at €99 (about £78) and it would be with us by 10th September.
After speaking to Eurogamer, Sony has now stated the launch date for UK is 19th September. This is slightly later than expected, but the price tag was also different to what we expected, it will cost £69.99.
