PlayTV Patch 1.10 has been released

Posted by Stefan Crowe On April - 7 - 2009

PlayTVA patch for the PlayStation 3 European digital TV add-on, PlayTV, has now been released bringing it to version 1.10. The patch was announced a few days ago but I thought I’d wait until it was actually out in the open before writing anything about it.

The key change in this update is the addition of automatic upscaling from Standard Definition (SD) broadcasts to High Definition (HD). HD is the big thing now y’hear, so this is a good thing!

A few sound enhancement have been made too, such as volume control with the official PS3 Blu-Ray remote and audio normalisation (similar to the feature added to music playback in firmware 2.70).

You can now also jump directly into TV mode from the XMB, so you don’t need the hassle of going through the PlayTV menus beforehand. In terms of playback, other than the sound changes, the only other change is slightly better rewind and fastforword handling, with new speeds added.

Almost smashed my keyboard in excitement!

i wish this hit the USA

    • Stefan Crowe says:

I’m sure it will soon. It just needs America to get a unified digital TV service.

i think it has to do with the fact that high speed internet isn’t as strong here as it needs to be. not to mention there are a few different providers for for broad casting so, getting a foot hold could be tough….. :( i love my ps3 and if it did every thing for me that would be awesome! now if it could only cook…..

Just downloaded it, but if Im honest I cant see too much difference between the upscaled TV and the old version.

Wish they would say how to use the volume control. Its not in the manual. Any ideas?

Glad to see they keep adding new features though. Cant wait for Freeview signals to be changed to HD!

Do you have the blu-ray remote? I’m not sure which buttons it is you use sorry, just try a few until you find it!

      • Babbajabba says:

Yeah, I have the offical Blu-Ray remote. Tried all of the buttons and looked on the PlayTv manuals too. Nothing says volume control. Shame that – Me using an ancient amp with no remote control means I have to keep getting up to adjust the volume.

I’m in the UK, our broadband is one of the worst, the average is around 1-2mb connection.

I don’t think it is to do with broadband as such just the fact the US doesn’t have a national digital TV service yet, although I hear that changes as of June this year?

i wonder. how well does it work? do you have to wait for it to buffer or any thing like that or does it just play like regular satalite or cable? do you have to watch what is on now or do you download shows like netflix?

  6. Stefan Crowe says:

I doubt it needs buffering, the PS3 is pretty powerful I’m sure it can handle upscaling. But I can’t say for sure as I haven’t had chance to check yet.

Just found the volume control. Its not mapped to the control pad, or the remote. You have to go into: Settings > Audio and then change the volume.

Kinda disappointing really, was hoping for it being mapped to a button.

  8. Stefan Crowe says:

    That does suck.

Maybe they should map it to the motion in the controllers. Shake it up for volume up and vice versa, ha.
