Blog Action Day 2008: Poverty isn’t a Game.

Posted by Stefan Crowe On October - 15 - 2008

I’d like to take a moment out from talking about all the great games due out in the next few months. Instead I feel we should reflect on just how much money we will be spending on these games, whilst people in developing countries can’t afford an education, clothes and in too many cases, food.

This isn’t a rant about us spending so much on the things we want, because it’s our right to choose how we use our money. I know most of you are aware of these problems but I just want to reiterate some of the poverty problems going on in the world.

Check out the video here: http://www.miniature-earth.com/

It puts the world into perspective in terms of what we take for granted and how many people are suffering. It points out that only 3% of the world stand a chance of reading this article (3 out of every 100 people have an internet connection).

The video includes statements such as 53% of the world’s population “struggle to live on US$ 2.00 [or less] per day”. Imagine you had to survive on that amount of money, granted living costs are much lower in relation as well, but not THAT much lower.

Finally the video ends by saying “appreciate what you have”, which is what I’m saying to all of you. Try to think of all the things you own, use, eat or see in a day and just be happy with your life.
