It seems there is a tug o’ war going on between Sony and Media Molecule at the moment on the whole issue of image importing with LittleBigPlanet.
First of all, you might be wondering what the big deal with being able to use your own images is. It gives the game that touts some of the most creative and unique features another twist. There are some pretty damn artistic people out there and just thinking of some of the custom levels they could create with their own backgrounds, foregrounds and stickers makes my mind spin. I personally would love to try and create some personal designs to further separate any levels.
So getting back on track, a key member of the Media Molecule team recently came out saying that image importing was definitely going to be in the game by Christmas. People rejoiced. But then the LBP Community Manager, who goes by the name alias Sam_Protagonist, came along a smashed those hopes, saying that although LittleBigPlanet is capable of image importing “Right now there are no plans to introduce image importing to the game, and we’ll update if that changes.” People grieved.
Finally, an image posted on the official Media Molecule has brought a ray of light back on the concept. The picture is shown below and clearly displays a version of LittleBigPlanet with support for image uploading for stickers. People can re-rejoice. Although this doesn’t necessarily confirm it will be included any time soon or at all, it shows that MM are working on it. I presume the major obstacle is Copyright issues involved with being able to upload anything and everything. But I believe if websites can allow you to upload any images as an avatar or into a photo gallery, why can’t a game? A simple disclaimer should wrap everything up surely?
