PS3 2.80 Changes Revealed – Longer Text Chat messages

Posted by Josh Davison On June - 25 - 2009

PS3 UpdateAs you probably know by now, Firmware version 2.80 for the PlayStation 3 was released yesterday. The only official message so far has been that it enhanced the playback of certain PlayStation 3 software, whether this was games or otherwise no-one knows.

At first there were rumours that the update sped up the XMB loading times and that the speed which trophy cards are displayed. However, many are claiming there has been no change. There has been a comment on the official PlayStation.Blog that may shed light on the issue, but keep in mind the author doesn’t seem to be anyone of authority.

====== TO EVERYONE =======

PlayStation 3 : Firmware V2.80 Change Log:

- PlayStation One Titles loading times have decreased.
- Internet Browser Loads pages smoother and has less issues with corrupted page loading.
- The Open Remote Play Hack has been scrambled for security reasons.
- The Bug that allowed Some online friends to be displayed as Offline has been fixed on small level.
- XMB Moves Much more smoother when used in-game.

This Update is a Optional Update, a user who has updated to 2.76 is not required to update to 2.80.

On top of these changes two other changes have been reported by several users across the internet:

  • Microphone volume for Official Sony Headset is frozen at level 3
  • The maximum character in the newish Text Chat has been extended from 32 to 64

If you notice any other changes, let us know.

I wonder if there’s anything else hidden in this update then…

The microphone volume level for the official Playstation Eye has been frozen at 3 too. Why I don’t know, I need the mic volume at max just to make myself heard thru official PS3 Headset. Lucky I got rid of the piece aof crap and got a better (louder) one ;-)

Seems odd why they would do this. If it was to minimise microphone spam, we already have mute functions in most games for this.

I wonder if it was intentional or an accidental change? We’ll soon know if we get a quick 2.81 patch.

My USB Guitar Hero controllers are always set to the highest controller avaiable by default when connecting them…it wasnt like this before the update & it happened to any1 else who did this update.
