Sony has (discreetly) released a firmware update for the PlayStation 3. Firmware 2.80 seems to only do one thin gaccording top the official PlayStation.Blog:
The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.
At the moment, the update isn’t mandatory and you don’t even get a notification that a new version is available. To obtain the system patch, you need to do so manually by going to the System section of the XMB and clicking the System Update icon.
If you find out what it does, even if its just what software is affected. Some rumours suggest it has sped up the XMB and trophy load times.

Poinltess, wheres our cross-game voice chat!?
ive gotten the update what i can confirm is that trophy load times remain the same. as far as the xmb goes seems about the same 2 me aswell unless im in a game in which case it DOES seem FASTER. HOWEVER the speed difference is nothing special. i believe that if there was a speed update 2 the xmb sony realized it wasnt special enough to warrant telling everyone they boosted xmb speed because the negative feedback sucks. as far as what titles run better i couldn’t tell ya. killzone 2, R E 5,street fighter 4, and infamous already looked amazing 2 me. blows my mind they can make em look betta.
It seems a Remote Play hack was fixed with the update, not sure if anything else was though

I’m running a Netgear ReadyNAS with a built in uPNP media server. Previous to this update, more than 50% of my DivX files were coming up as “Unsupported Data”, and it showed as xVid format. After applying this update, these are all playable. The only formats I can’t seem to play now are 720p MKV and WMV!
Useful to know. Thanks Darrin.
It would be nice if Sony added support to the Matroska HD format.
