The PlayStation 3 firmware that was first unveiled at Gamescom has now gone live. Firmware 3.0 (or is it 3.00?) can now e downloaded in the usual manner, by clicking on the Update icon in the settings tab of the Xross Media Bar.
One of the most significant changes includes a slight reworking of XMB accessibility, which involves shortcuts to certain applications (such as the iPlayer for UK residents), and a What’s New section under the Network section. The What’s New widget shows some of the latest links, videos, PlayStation Store downloads and your three most recently played games. There is now also a status bar where the clock used to be in the top-right of the screen. The clock is still there, but it now also displays some PSN details, like the number of online friends and message notifications.
A few other great noticeable modifications with Firmware 3.0 are the ability to change video playback speed using the right analog stick, dynamic (animated) themes, Trophy organisation (although you won’t notice any changes until it is implemented by game developers), and for the more techy of you there is now support for multiple audio outputs at the same time.
After downloading and installing the new firmware this morning, there seems to be a slight speedup in XMB loading and game startup times. There is a new boot up screen with the PS3 logo that can be seen on the new PS3 slims casing and the PlayStation 3 message at game start no longer seems to be shown.
In all honesty though, the single greatest change has to be that the clock no longer gets obstructed by that bloody battery notification when you press the PS button on your controller.
