The rumour mill has been running on overtime this past week for the PSP. If the hearsay is to be believed, the PSP could be getting a number of new digital services that further reinforce the notorious PSP Go rumour.
The PSP Go is a new version of the PSP that, unlike previous hardware revisions in the series, will truly revolutionise the PlayStation Portable brand. The supposed changes include increasing the screen size to almost fit the whole height and width of the handheld, the screen will slide to give access to the controls which are hidden under the screen when not needed. The device is also rumoured to have a built in HDD, with some sources stating to iterations of the PSP Go will be released with 8GB and 16GB hard drives.
One of the biggest changes with this still unconfirmed PSP Go will be the removal of the UMD drive altogether, instead Sony will rely on digital distribution and possibly, memory cards with pre-installed games.
The two services I mentioned at the beginning of this article that support this new direction are rumors Sony is looking at adding game rental and music download functionality to the PSP in future. Apparently Sony has been in preliminary talks with major record labels about adding music downloads to the PSN.
THis all sound really good, but possibly a bit too good to be true. Heck, even if it does turn out to be true, will Sony be able to bring this around in the next 5 years given their track record of bringing in new services (i.e. Home and VidZone)?
