Got Sky, an Xbox 360 and live in the UK? Well you could soon be watching your Sky programmes on your console thanks to a new co-operative scheme by Microsoft and Sky. The joint venture will bring Live TV, including Premiership football, movies and the latest hit TV shows, such as Lost and 24, to the games c0nsole.
This is a great step in the right direction in bringing together all the household entertainment in to one zone. This will open up access to many new potential customers. Although no Sky set top box is needed, the relevant Sky subscriptions are still required to watch the programmes (e.g. movie package to watch any of the movie channels, etc.).
I find it funny that the BBC news report that details some of this information also claims:
“It will be the first time that live television has been available through a games console in the UK and Ireland.”
Now correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Sony do this a year ago with the PlayTV? That brought Freeview (free-to-view digital TV in the UK) on the PlayStation 3, which included Live broadcasts and being able to pause, rewind and record TV while playing games. I have to admit though, having Sky on my console would be a great bonus if I could afford their tariffs.
